Vancouver Island University sues pro-Palestinian protest leaders

A university in British Columbia has launched a lawsuit against the organiser of a pro-Palestinian protest camp that was set up on the university campus on 1 May, reports CBC News.

Court documents posted online on Monday 15 July show that Vancouver Island University (VIU) has filed a lawsuit against several named individuals, as well John Doe, Jane Doe and “all unknown persons operating as ‘VIU Palestinian Solidarity Encampment’,” which was set up on 1 May.

In a statement posted online, the Nanaimo-based university says it has “regrettably” launched a notice of external claim in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, “seeking injunctive relief and damages from the encampment participants”. “VIU must protect the safety and peace of all persons on campus. The continued presence of the encampment and encampment members participating in the above-prohibited conduct are now preventing this,” the statement says.
