Kuwait, Qatar slash Jordanian universities they recognise

Two Gulf countries have drastically reduced the number of Jordanian universities that they will recognise, calling into question the quality of Jordanian higher education. A few days after Kuwait cut the number of Jordanian universities whose degrees it would recognise from 20 to five, Qatar followed by reducing the number it would recognise from 13 to six, writes Hamad Othman for Al-Fanar Media.

Most of the Jordanian institutions eliminated from recognition are private universities. All but one of those whose degrees will still be recognised in the two Gulf countries are public institutions. The changes raise questions about the quality of education in the private universities, often viewed as a second choice for those without the high exam scores needed to get into the less-expensive public universities.

“The two decisions are not surprising,” said Fakher Daas, coordinator of Thabahtoona, a national campaign for student rights. “This is the result of the decline and deterioration of higher education policies in the kingdom over the last 15 years.”
