All six local universities to raise fees

All six local universities in Singapore will be raising their tuition fees for the new academic year, which begins in August, while some also intend to bump up scholarships and financial aid, reports The Star.

Tuition fees for the new intake of Singapore citizens will go up by SG$50 (US$37) a year – or about 0.4% to 0.6% – for the bulk of undergraduate programmes at four universities, according to the Ministry of Education.

Since 2010, university fees have largely gone up every year. The fee hikes for local undergraduates for previous years ranged from 0.6% to 8%. University fees are determined by the universities, which are autonomous, in close consultation with the ministry, a Ministry of Education spokesman said.
