Agricultural higher education for sustainable development

Universities engaged in agricultural research and education are contributing to sustainable economic development through tackling food security challenges due to climate change and also by enabling the growth of agri-businesses and entrepreneurship. In these efforts, the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture and its 143 member institutions are playing a leading role.

The state of graduate unemployment in Africa could have been resolved long ago if governments had moved beyond hatching fragmented intervention policies that fail to address challenges that impede the development of a skilled youth workforce on the continent.
Youth in Africa have been urged to adopt agribusiness as a viable and rewarding employment option that could create attractive-wage job opportunities, reduce widespread poverty in rural areas and help to eradicate distorted patterns of rapid urbanisation.
The financial support from institutions such as the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture and its partners to students in the agricultural sector is building the skills base in a sector that is vital for sustainable development and food security on the continent.
A student entrepreneur recalls how he bounced back from disaster, thanks to mentorship and support by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture and the Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development or TAGDev project.
