The 15th annual general meeting (AGM) of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) and the third annual Forum for African Women Vice Chancellors (FAWoVC) were held at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana from 2-6 December. The theme of the AGM, which attracted over 900 participants from Africa and beyond, was “Delivering on Africa's universities Agenda for Higher Agricultural Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (AHESTI): What will it take?”

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), in partnership with Kenya's University of Nairobi, hosted its Second Biennial International Conference from 18-20 November 2019 under the theme “Africa and the Fourth Industrial Revolution [4IR]: Defining a role for research universities”. The ARUA network is made up of 16 universities and 350 researchers in Africa, aimed at enhancing research and graduate training in member institutions.

The 14th edition of eLearning Africa was held from 23 to 25 October in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Under the theme "The Keys to the Future: Learnability and employability", the gathering focused on two of the most important attributes needed in tomorrow’s rapidly changing global economy: learnability and employability.

Jointly organised with St Mary’s University, the symposium was marked by discussions and analyses of topical higher education issues of regional, trans-regional and international significance by experts from the three regions and beyond.

The 2019 Siyaphumelela Conference, hosted by the South African Institute for Distance Education or SAIDE, which manages the Kresge Foundation-funded Siyaphumelela project in South Africa, was held in Johannesburg from 25-27 June. The conference explored several themes around the use of data analytics to promote student success.

The Association of African Universities has asked the African Union to show the necessary support for the Continental Education Strategy for Africa in order to make it work, arguing that, three years into the launch of the strategy, the African Union is yet to back it with the “appropriate level of funding”.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Young Scholars in Africa Conference, held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 1-3 March, aimed to identify and tackle the reasons behind Africa’s shortage of young scientists and scholars, a situation which impedes socio-economic growth and fails to provide the rapidly growing higher education sector with the necessary human resources and to build up adequate research.

The annual leadership retreat facilitated by Inyathelo: The South African Institute for Advancement, aimed at university vice-chancellors and other educational leaders, was held from 21-23 January in Cape Town. While issues relating to long-term sustainability of higher education institutions topped the agenda, a number of burning issues such as race and inequity in the sector were also considered.
