Berlin applied sciences universities gain doctorate powers
For the first time, anyone wishing to write their doctoral thesis in Berlin can now do so at a university of applied sciences. The Berlin Science Administration has granted the Berliner Hochschule für Technik (BHT) and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (HTW Berlin) the right to award doctorates, as was announced in a press release, reports Berlin.de.Specifically, it is about the newly established doctoral centres “Machine Learning, Robotics, Life Science and Interactive Systems” and “Energy System Transformation and Climate Neutrality”. The centres are operated jointly by both universities. Science Senator Ina Czyborra (SPD) explained: “The two universities have demonstrated scientific excellence and the ability to award doctorates in their respective profile areas.”
The right to award doctorates not only promotes the research strength of Berlin’s universities of applied sciences, but also opens up new paths for research-oriented careers.
