Not too late to apply for college financial aid via FAFSA

As August progresses, college-bound students in the United States and their parents are increasingly focused on funding higher education. Despite common concerns, there is still ample time and funding available for those seeking financial aid, reports KHQ.

Forbes reported that over US$100 million in scholarships go unclaimed each year. Similarly, the National College Network states that US$4.4 billion in Pell Grants were left unclaimed in 2024. The primary reason for this is that students are not completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which determines eligibility for federal financial aid.

Julie Pettitt-Booth, executive director of admissions at Montana State University Billings, explained the challenges students face with FAFSA. “FAFSA isn’t the most obvious application, not like riding a bike. It’s not intuitive,” Pettitt-Booth said. “And so there’s a lot of people here that are willing to help and explain it until it makes sense and that our students really understand what their options are.”
