Why 42,000 students turned down university placements
Over 42,000 Kenyan students who qualified for university placement in 2025 after the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams did not apply for placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), reports Wiltord Otieno for The Kenya Times.Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba reported that, out of 246,391 students who qualified for university with a C+ or above, only 201,695 (83%) applied for placement.
KUCCPS placed 310,502 students across various institutions, including 194,372 in degree and diploma programmes. This includes 7,640 students who opted for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes and 6,750 who chose Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) or teacher training colleges.
