University leaders defend academic freedom in statement
University leaders across Iceland have issued a strong joint statement warning that academic freedom is under increasing threat around the world, reports Michael Chapman for the Iceland Review.Within it, rectors from seven Icelandic universities stress the vital role that these principles play in strengthening democracy, advancing knowledge and supporting social development. “It includes the right of scholars to seek truth and knowledge without undue interference. To teach and discuss ideas freely. And to communicate research findings without fear of censorship or reprisal,” the statement reads.
Local media reports that the statement was discussed during a recent meeting of the Higher Education Cooperation Committee. It marks exactly 20 years since a similar declaration was signed under the leadership of Páll Skúlason, then rector of the University of Iceland. The new statement also highlights the importance of universities being free from political or commercial influence.
