Open University head calls for micro-credential guidelines

The vice-chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Olufemi Peters, has called for nationally recognised guidelines to ensure the quality and relevance of micro-credentials align with national education objectives and quality assurance measures, writes Frank Ikpefan for The Nation.

He stated this in Abuja while declaring open a regional consultative meeting for West Africa organised by the Regional Training and Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning, National Open University of Nigeria in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning. The event drew participants from Togo, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ghana.

Micro-credentialing refers to the recognition of specific skills or competencies through bite-sized credentials, often in the form of digital badges or certificates. Peters said micro-credentialing was reshaping the landscape of education and professional development. He called on the National Universities Commission to take the lead in developing clear definitions, standards and goals for micro-credentialing in Nigeria.
