Punjab shuts tertiary institutions amid border tensions
Punjab’s Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Thursday 8 May ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the state for the next three days amid what officials described as a “devolving situation”. The directive applies to all government, private and aided schools, colleges and universities, reports the Express News Service. This came as eight missiles from Pakistan were directed towards parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and a blackout was enforced in several districts of Pakistan and Chandigarh. “In view of the devolving situation, it is hereby ordered that all Schools, Colleges and Universities – Government, Private and Aided – across entire Punjab shall remain completely closed for the next three days,” Bains posted on X.
In a parallel move, the Chandigarh administration also announced that all schools in the Union Territory will remain shut for the next two days, citing an alert issued by the public relations department. The Kapurthala district administration said all schools, coaching centres, English language test preparation institutes, and Industrial Training Institutes will remain closed on 9 and 10 May. However, institutions conducting examinations will continue to function, it said.
