Greek university submits plans to establish Cyprus branches

The University of Athens (UOA) has submitted a preliminary application to establish four schools in Cyprus, following months of discussions and legislative preparations, writes Evangelia Sizopoulou for In-Cyprus PhileNews.

The four proposed UOA schools include health sciences, economic sciences, education sciences, and philosophy, according to sources from the Ministry of Education. This development represents the first concrete step forward among several Greek universities that have expressed interest in establishing a presence in Cyprus. The branches will operate as private entities, meaning students will pay tuition fees, though the exact amounts have not yet been determined. Admission will not involve the Pancyprian Access Examinations process, with specific entry criteria still to be established by the academic institutions themselves.

At least three additional Greek universities have shown interest in expanding to Cyprus: the National Technical University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the University of Thessaly. The latter has specifically expressed interest in establishing a Veterinary School in Athienou, with the university’s rector expected to visit Cyprus soon.
