Professors go without pay in ongoing national turbulence
After teachers in primary and secondary schools in Serbia went on strike, university professors, whose students have launched protests and blockades calling for an end to corruption and more government accountability, have also gone without pay, writes Boban Karovi for NIN.The second part of their February salary has not been paid. In the meantime, the government has officially concluded that only a portion of the funds for faculty salaries will be allocated to higher education institutions that are blocked, where there are no classes or exams. Full amounts will be paid for non-teaching staff. For teaching staff, only the funds intended for scientific research, professional or artistic work will be disbursed. Furthermore, the calculation method for the salaries of teaching staff at higher education institutions has changed – scientific work will now account for 12.5% of the total salary, while teaching work will account for 87.5%.
However, that is not all. On Tuesday 25 March, an inspection oversight began at the blocked faculties, during which it will be determined, as stated by the Ministry of Education, the “legality of operations at higher education institutions”.
