Students eye up Australia as universities brace for cuts
Students say the New Zealand government would be fuelling a brain drain if it goes ahead with plans to reduce university funding, writes Glenn McConnell for Stuff.The Tertiary Education Union and sources in the sector say courses will close if funding is cut. And if course offerings are reduced in New Zealand, then students say that will be yet another reason for them to move to Australia.
Stuff revealed the government has briefed university leaders about plans to end a 4% ‘lifeline’ funding boost. They received that boost in 2023 as a stopgap measure to prevent more courses from being canned.
