Matabeleland Province to get its first private university

The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (Zimche) has approved the proposed University of Matopo, a development which has been applauded by the people of Matabeleland, writes Silas Nkala for News Day.

In a letter dated 9 January 2025, addressed to Professor Henry Sibanda who applied for the university, Zimche chief executive Peter Kuzvinetsa Dzvimbo said the institute would be established in Matobo district, Matabeleland South Province.

Sibanda recently applied for permission to register and build a private university in Matobo to be named University of Matopo. It will be the second institute of higher learning established in Matabeleland South after Gwanda State University. It will be the first private university in the province.
