HE body proposes recognition of prior learning guidelines

In a bid to integrate informal and formal learning, India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) will come out with draft guidelines on the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), writes Kavita Bajeli-Datt for The New Indian Express. The guidelines will help to access higher education, earn formal qualifications and improve job chances.

UGC Chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar said: “We must address the challenges faced by India’s large informal workforce, which requires formal education and career progression opportunities. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is integral to the vision of the National Education Policy 2020.”

He said RPL allows individuals to gain formal recognition for skills and competencies acquired through informal, non-formal or experiential learning. In its meeting on 14 November, the commission approved the draft, which will soon be made public for feedback.
