Concerns as number of students going to university stalls

The ratio of school leavers in Ireland who went to university this year has stalled, the Irish Independent Feeder Schools supplement confirmed, writes Laura Lynott for the Irish Independent.

With 76% of pupils going on to third level, there remains a strong appetite for education beyond the Leaving Cert. However, statistics also show there has been a one percentage point decline in the last year. There was an even bigger drop for fee-paying school students. Last year, 94% of private-school students went to university. This year, it is about 90%.

Some educators are concerned that economic and housing challenges are making it more difficult for some young people to attend university.
