Education ministry plans to cull around 20 universities

The Ukrainian Education Ministry plans to reduce the number of universities across the country to about 100, down from 121 currently, Deputy Education Minister Mykhailo Vynnytskyi said on 8 November, reports NV.

Vynnytskyi stated that, currently, Ukraine has 121 universities. However, in the future, only around 100 will remain. This figure applies only to universities under the jurisdiction of the Education Ministry and does not include military academies or universities managed by other government departments.

“Demographics show that 15 years ago we had 630,000 high school graduates,” Vynnytskyi said. “This year, there will be slightly more than 300,000 graduates, and we are heading towards a potential student base of 250,000. The system was built for 600,000. Clearly, it needs to be reduced.”
