At Kyiv’s request, Lithuania halts refugee university funding

Starting September 2024, Lithuania will no longer subsidise university education for newly arrived Ukrainian refugees, Lithuania’s Education Ministry announced on 15 July, reports NV.

According to Lithuanian news agency BNS, the ministry stated that the country will continue to cover tuition costs for Ukrainian students who arrived in Lithuania after the 2022 Russian invasion and are currently enrolled in Lithuanian higher education institutions. However, government financial assistance will not be extended to new arrivals.

Surprisingly, this decision was made at Kyiv’s request, noting that higher education institutions are available in Ukraine, making it unnecessary to relocate their studies abroad. Since early 2022, the Lithuanian government has been providing Ukrainian students with monthly grants of €300 (US$328) and covering 60% of annual tuition costs for undergraduates, with the remaining costs being funded by the educational institutions.
