UGC calls for end to unhealthy food in university canteens
The University Grants Commission (UGC) in India has urged universities and colleges to prohibit the sale of unhealthy foods in their canteens, writes Vikash Sharma for Odishatv.in.The Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi) asked for the prohibition of unhealthy foods in educational institutions and promotion of healthy food options in canteens. NAPi is a national think tank on nutrition consisting of independent experts in epidemiology, human nutrition, community nutrition and paediatrics, medical education, administration, social work, and management.
NAPi suggested prohibiting the sale of unhealthy food in higher education institutions after expressing concern over the rising obesity, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and to build a case for accelerated implementation of the National Multi-sectoral Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Common NCDs (2017-22), the UGC said.
