Morocco, EU deepen higher education ties in new partnership

Morocco and the European Union signed a partnership agreement in Rabat on 3 July, focusing on higher education, scientific research, innovation and mobility. The event, which also celebrated 27 new Moroccan recipients of Erasmus Mundus scholarships, marks a notable step in the EU’s educational outreach, writes Mahamadou Simpara for Morocco World News.

The agreement, signed by EU Ambassador Patricia Llombart Cussac and Moroccan Minister for Higher Education Abdellatif Miraoui, aligns with Morocco’s ‘National Plan for the Acceleration and Transformation of the Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Ecosystem’ (PACTE ESRI 2030).

The partnership, developed with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, involves an estimated investment of MAD490 million (US$49.6 million). While the financial and academic commitments are substantial, the partnership also aims to address several critical objectives. These include supporting Moroccan universities, promoting international exchanges in higher education, helping more medical students to study at European universities, and strengthening academic and scientific ties between Morocco and Europe.
