Professors at 25 federal universities decide to end strike

Professors from at least 25 federal universities in Brazil have already decided to end the strike that began in mid-April (over wages and declining budgets, among other issues), writes Gilberto Costa for Agência Brasil.

The deadline for teachers to hold assemblies at their universities to analyse the government proposals and decide on the return to classes ended on 21 June. The consultation in the 55 universities was determined by the national command of the university teachers’ strike, linked to the National Union of Higher Education Institution Teachers (ANDES).

However, the end of the strike does not mean the immediate return to classes and other academic activities. Each university has administrative autonomy to re-establish its calendar for the completion of the first academic semester of 2024 and the beginning of the second academic semester of 2024. For example, the professors at the University of Brasília announced that they would return to classes on Wednesday 26 June.
