Melbourne University faces its racist past in new book
One of Australia’s most prestigious universities has owned up to its racist past, which included platforming eugenicists, according to a ABC Radio Melbourne report presented by Rafael Epstein.University of Melbourne Associate Provost Marcia Langton helped write the newly published book, Dhoombak Goobgoowana: A History of Indigenous Australia and the University of Melbourne. She said it was essential to healing relationships, as it allowed the truth to “be brought out into the open”.
University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) Professor Barry Judd said the book gave greater insight into “who we are” as a nation. “We don’t, as a nation I think, spend enough time looking at ourselves and reflecting on our own stories and histories,” he said.
