Government allocates more funds for HE worker salaries
After the Council of Rectors in Bulgaria expressed readiness to protest and shut down universities on 20 May, the caretaker government allocated BGN39 million (US$21.6 million) for the salaries of lecturers and workers in higher education establishments, reports BNT.The money was derived from the current budget. However, a further BGN184 million is being sought after MPs passed changes to the Higher Education Act.
The leaders of the higher education institutions met the president and the prime minister on 15 May. The government will provide BGN39 million for academic staff salaries starting from 1 January 2024. Thus, the remuneration for the lowest academic post will increase by BGN290. Galin Tsokov, caretaker minister of education and science, said: “In proportion to this, the salaries of the rest of the academic staff will increase.”
