University faculty resist bid to replace vice-chancellor

The Faculty Association of Nimba University in Nimba County, Liberia, has resisted a plan by the director of the Commission on Higher Education, Dr Edward Lama Wonkeryor, to replace the president of Nimba University, Dr Jesse N Mongrue, reports The New Dawn Liberia.

The Faculty Association, in a communication, revealed that Wonkeryor had already recommended that Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai nominate a new president for the university because Mongrue allegedly lacked oversight ability. The association quoted the commission head as saying that Nimba University, under the administration of Mongrue, is retrogressing, with all development at a standstill, thus calling for an audit of the present administration.

Wonkeryor is a former president of Nimba University, whom Mongrue succeeded. According to the faculty, during the administration of Wonkeryor, activities at the university were characterised by demonstrations, lack of communication, lack of a reporting system, and lack of accountability, with widespread corruption. The association noted that Mongrue, who has spent only two years at Nimba University, has achieved in the areas of human resource and capacity development.
