Flemish government vetoes plans for English-only masters
The Flemish government in Belgium is denying permission to scrap several Dutch-medium programmes at Flemish universities, writes Colin Clapson for VRT.The universities want to offer 10 MSc (Master of Science) programmes only in English, but Education Minister Ben Weyts (nationalist) is not amused. “We are never going to allow Dutch to be removed from our higher education,” he said.
“I understand universities wanting to respond to the demands of some sectors and wanting more foreign students,” responds Weyts. “But this should not be at the expense of Flemish students. Our academic offerings must remain accessible to all. That means that Dutch must remain a fully-fledged language in our higher education.”
