In support of both national and global initiatives to address climate change, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) University’s roadmap toward COP28 and beyond (2023-26), and the historic UAE Consensus at the UN Climate Change Conference or COP28, the UAE University launched the ‘Green Research Projects’, a programme designed to finance and bolster research endeavours focused on sustainability and climate change.

Professor Ahmed Murad, associate provost for research at the UAE University, said: “Scientific research plays a vital and important role in identifying and understanding the effects of climate change and finding sustainable solutions. The UAE University supports and encourages researchers to make a positive impact that enhances the sustainability of our society and the entire world.”

He emphasised that this initiative reflects the UAE University’s commitment to contribute effectively to protecting the environment and combating climate change. This step is strengthening the global efforts towards raising awareness on the importance of sustainability and promoting scientific research in areas that positively affect the environment and achieve sustainable development.

Professor Murad stressed that funding such projects provides researchers with the opportunity to undertake initiatives contributing to sustainable development and climate change mitigation, both within the United Arab Emirates and globally.

He expressed the UAE University’s commitment to further solidify its leadership in scientific research and innovation, aiming to achieve sustainable development while supporting national and global efforts to discover innovative solutions to climate change.

The UAE University has allocated funding for 20 research projects commencing in January 2024. These projects focus on sustainability and climate change mitigation, covering areas such as renewable energy technologies, natural resource management and sustainable agriculture.

The funded projects are distributed across various disciplines, with 10 for the College of Engineering, five for the College of Science, two for the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, and one each for the College of Information Technology, College of Business and Economics, and College of Law.

This is the ninth in a series of articles promoted by the United Arab Emirates University.
