Joint tertiary degree route offers choice of 40 courses

The Central Applications Office and Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses have been around for a long time in Ireland, but joint tertiary degrees are in their infancy. They combine the best of both worlds when it comes to post-school education paths, writes Katherine Donnelly for the Irish Independent.

They allow students to start a degree course in a college of further education – which operates under the umbrella of education and training boards – where they spend a year or two, and then automatically transfer (subject to passing exams) to a higher education institution in the same region to complete it. By contrast, those who do a PLC with a view to progressing to higher education must compete for a place using their PLC results.

After a successful launch in 2023, this year there is expected to be a doubling, to more than 40, in the number of joint tertiary entry routes available via further education colleges.
