Talented students can benefit from Africa’s energy sector

The African Energy Chamber’s Education Fund has called on young Africans to contribute to Africa’s energy transformation and development related to gas, nuclear, hydrogen and other renewable energy projects.

To help the chamber’s education fund achieve its aim of also contributing to skills development, it has called on young Africans who are pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in the oil, gas and energy-related fields, to apply for support to study in fields such as engineering, geosciences, economics, finance and law.

In a statement, the African Energy Chamber said: “The funds come at a critical time when Africa is witnessing rapid advancements in gas and renewable energy, presenting immense opportunities for economic growth and environmental sustainability.”

According to the chamber’s statement, it was “committed to providing financial aid and educational resources to talented African students from South Africa to Egypt, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Namibia and across Africa …”

“Through strategic partnerships with educational institutions, the chamber will offer scholarships, grants and mentorship programmes to deserving students on the continent and those studying in the diaspora.

“This holistic approach to support aims to nurture the brightest minds in the energy sector, enabling them to contribute effectively to the continent’s energy transition and project development landscape.”

According to the chamber, the financial need of applicants may be taken into consideration, but is not the sole determining factor, and preference will be given to female applicants.

The application process started in June and closes on August 31. Recipients will receive financial support ranging from US$5,000 to US$10,000.

The chamber’s Education Fund Committee will evaluate applicants based on the eligibility criteria, academic achievements, personal statements and letters of recommendation.

The awardees will be able to attend the youth forum at African Energy Week that will take place from 16-20 October 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.
