South Sudanese students protest outside embassy in Egypt
A standoff has ensued between South Sudanese embassy officials in Egypt and protesting students who are demanding a solution to their woes in the education programme, writes Yiep Joseph for The City Review. It all began when South Sudanese students under government scholarships in Egypt stormed the embassy premises in Cairo a week ago, demanding that the government addresses their concerns. According to an anonymous source who spoke to The City Review, some students were arrested while others were injured when violence broke out between them and the ant-riot police on Monday.
The source said some students were asked by their universities to pay for accommodation while others were given courses that do not match their careers, hence triggering the backlash. The source said the authorities failed to respond to the grievances of students when they approached the South Sudanese embassy. “The students are still demanding their rights as authorities keep deaf ears on the matter,” he said.
