University boots 15 government workers off honours course

Months after removing Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and former health MEC Sindiswa Gomba from its postgraduate programme, the University of Fort Hare in South Africa has now deregistered another 15 public servants for not meeting admission requirements, writes Malibongwe Dayimani for News24.

This comes as the Special Investigating Unit is probing allegations of maladministration, mismanagement of funds, and sourcing of public servants for study at Fort Hare.

The deregistered officials, who were enrolled for the honours in public administration course, work in the Eastern Cape provincial legislature and its departments as well as local municipalities. Their exclusion is linked to a former professor of public sector economics at Fort Hare, Professor Edwin Okey Chikata Ijeoma. The university’s disciplinary committee found him guilty of admitting civil servants to the university’s Bhisho campus for honours and masters degrees without having the minimum requirements for admission.
