Universities close due to strike over neoliberal policies

Several universities in Ecuador were closed on Monday 13 June after the announcement of a day of national mobilisation against the government’s neoliberal policies. The suspension of classes was reported by at least five higher education centres in several provinces, through their accounts on social networks and spaces for exchange with students, writes Ana Luisa Brown for Prensa Latina.

The measure was to be adopted by the Central University of Ecuador, located in Quito, and the National Polytechnic School University, in Cuenca, both of the public education system. The Universidad Catolica and UTE, the Politecnica Salesiana and the Superior Politecnica del Litoral, among others, were also to keep their classrooms closed. The possible paralysis of roads and consequent problems for public transportation were some of the reasons that led these facilities to apply the provision.

For its part, the Education Ministry indicated that on-site teaching at the national level had not been suspended. “The educational community is informed that on Monday, June 13, 2022, on-site classes continue, guaranteeing the right to education for children, teenagers, young people and adults in schools of all types,” the agency said in a statement.
