Race to find university places for students from Ukraine
While the Department of International Relations and Cooperation is leading the charge in evacuating South Africans stranded in the eastern European country of Ukraine, as well as from Russia, student representative and civil rights organisations are racing against time to place returning students in local universities, writes Norman Masungwini for City Press. The SA international students association and Expat SA have sent an urgent SOS to various medical universities in the country to accept the students – most of whom are studying medicine – and allow them to continue their studies.
The two organisations have contacted the University of the Witwatersrand, Rhodes University, the University of Cape Town and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in a bid to accommodate the students who were studying in Ukraine and Russia. According to Expat SA founder Lebone Kganyago, their biggest worry is that time is not on the students’ side, as no one knows how long the war is going to last.
