Universities in the dark over free COVID tests for students
Universities in England say they have been plunged into confusion about whether they can keep handing out free lateral flow COVID-19 tests to students, writes Will Hazell for iNews.A legal agreement with the government which allows universities to hand out the tests was due to expire on Friday 18 February, with institutions unsure about whether they can continue distributing them.
It comes amid growing speculation that ministers are planning to end the free supply of the rapid COVID-19 tests as part of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans to “live with the virus”. i understands that universities were notified on Monday 14 February that a legal agreement underpinning the free provision of tests ends on Friday 18 February. Universities are in the dark about if and when it will be renewed.
