Amid protests over rector’s appointment, three deans removed
Three elected deans of Turkey’s Bogazici University – where daily vigils against the appointment of the university rector Naci Inci by the Turkish president are continuing – have been removed from office by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) following a meeting on 18 January, reports Bianet. The deans are Professor Özlem Berk Albachten, the dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, Professor Metin Ercan, the dean of the faculty of economics and administrative sciences, and Professor Yasemin Bayyurt, the dean of the faculty of education.
Academics of the related faculties made statements for the press in front of the three faculties of the university on 20 January. Referring to the first rector appointed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on 1 January 2021, Melih Bulu, the academics said that the interventions in the university since then have been causing irreversible damage to Bogazici. After the statements, the academics came in front of the rectorate at the South Campus for their daily vigil against Bulu’s successor, Naci Inci, also appointed by Erdogan.
