Potential staff strikes signal huge disruption to universities
The University and College Union (UCU) in the United Kingdom is threatening strike action before Christmas and into the New Year in a row with employers over pensions and pay and conditions, writes Will Hazell for iNews. If the strikes go ahead, they would spell huge disruption at a time when students are only just beginning to return to face-to-face teaching after months of online learning because of the pandemic.
The UCU said that it would run the latest ballots from 18 October to 4 November. Members will vote on whether to take action at 152 institutions in total – six over pensions, 83 over pay and working conditions, with a further 63 institutions facing ballots over both pensions and pay and conditions.
