Common entrance test for central universities put on hold

The Indian government has postponed its proposal to introduce a common entrance test for admissions to all 45 central universities to 2022-23. Given the situation caused by the pandemic, all admissions to central universities for 2021-22 will be done as in previous years, the University Grants Commission announced on Sunday 18 July, reports The Hindu.

This comes as a relief for a section of students, especially Delhi University aspirants, who had pleaded for the continued use of Class 12 marks as the basis of admission, even in a year when Class 12 board examinations were not held.

As in previous years, the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) will still be conducted by the consortium of 14 newer central universities who already use it for their admissions, Higher Education Secretary Amit Khare told The Hindu. However, the proposal for CUCET to be conducted by the National Testing Agency for all 45 central universities has been shelved until next year, he said.
