Former politicians appointed to public university posts

Tanzanian President John Magufuli has appointed former Zanzibar president Dr Ali Mohamed Shein and former culture minister Dr Harrison Mwakyembe to the posts of university chancellor and chairman of university council, respectively, reports The Guardian Tanzania.

The Directorate of Presidential Communications said in a statement that Shein, who stepped down early this month after serving two five-year terms, is the new chancellor of Mzumbe University, whose main campus is in Morogoro. “Dr Shein takes over from Judge (rtd) Barnabas Samatta whose term has elapsed,” the brief statement indicated.

On the other hand, Dr Mwakyembe, a former law lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, who last served as minister for information, culture and sports, becomes the new chairman of the council of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. He takes over from Mariam Mwaffisi whose term of service has ended, the statement said.
