Review suggests changes in university offers procedure

A major review of admissions by Universities UK has recommended switching to ‘post qualifications admissions’, where students are only given offers once they have their results, writes Will Hazell for iNews.

Currently most students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland apply for places on the basis of predicted grades. However, a major review of admissions by Universities UK has recommended switching to ‘post qualifications admissions’. Universities UK said the change would result in “greater transparency and confidence in the admissions system”, give students “more choice for longer” and be “less distracting” in the run up to exams. It also said the move would reduce reliance on predicted grades, which research suggests can penalise disadvantaged students because of teachers under-predicting.

Vice-chancellors have been resistant to post qualifications admissions in the past, so their support is a significant turning point. Earlier in the week the university admissions body UCAS announced it also backed an overhaul.
