Universities and colleges to relocate to rural areas

Mongolia’s Deputy Minister of Education and Science G Ganbayar said at a press briefing on 26 October that the relocation of universities and colleges in Ulaanbaatar city to rural regions, which has been a long-standing topic of discussion in the past decade, will be put into action from next year, writes T Baljmaa for Montsame.

“The cabinet will soon be discussing an issue of building university towns in Khovd, Dornod, Orkhon, Darkhan-Uul and Dornogobi aimags. In particular, feasibility studies will be developed on relocating the Mongolian University of Life Sciences to Darkhan-Uul aimag (administrative subdivision), Mongolian University of Science and Technology to Erdenet city in Orkhon aimag to be settled down by the Erdenet Mining Corporation in Erdenet city, universities engaged in education, health and social fields to Khovd and Dornod aimags, and mining universities and colleges to Dornogobi aimag and other Gobi region aimags. The National University of Mongolia is deemed not necessary to be relocated from its location in the capital city,” he said.

The government has also considered that relocation of universities to Baganuur district near Ulaanbaatar city, as mentioned before, would require high-priced development.
