Universities see 15% increase in student numbers

In this atypical year, almost 51,000 students have entered into the first phase of the National Competition for Access to Higher Education, which represents an increase of 15% compared to the last year, according to the results of the Directorate General of University Education (DGES), reports The Portugal News.

The almost 12,000 that failed to secure a place in higher education can now run for the second phase of the contest from 28 September. For the second phase the institutions have at least 6,050 places for students.

In total, DGES figures point to about 73,000 students in undergraduate, integrated masters courses and more than 9,500 in higher education short courses, that is, higher professional technical courses. In this estimate, DGES takes into account students who are able to enter through special access regimes and special competitions. Through the special contingent for students with disabilities, universities are receiving more students with disabilities, which show an increase of 39% compared to last year. However, this represents only 312 new students, according to DGES data.
