Record number of students secure a university place
A record number of students have a United Kingdom university place following the U-turn to use teacher assessed grades to award places, figures from UCAS have confirmed, writes Will Hazell for iNews.Data from the university admissions service shows that as of 10 September – 28 days after A-level results day – there were 515,650 students with a confirmed place. This is a 4% increase on last year. While there had been concerns that students would defer in large numbers to next year because of the coronavirus, these fears have not materialised. The proportion of students with a deferred place is 5.7% this year – similar to the 5.4% recorded in 2019.
The number of international students also continues to look relatively buoyant. Numbers of students accepted from outside the European Union have increased by 9% to 44,300, although acceptances from the EU saw a slight fall of 2% to 29,630. However, definitive figures for international students will only be confirmed when they formally enrol for the start of term.
