Graduations back on at New Zealand universities

Students will once again have the option of crossing a stage in a cap and gown as graduation ceremonies are slowly reinstated in New Zealand, after they were postponed to stop the spread of coronavirus, write Kate Green and Laura Wiltshire for Stuff.

Victoria University announced its May graduation will instead be held in September, with two parades and seven ceremonies. Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smith said while students had already received a physical copy of their certificate, the ceremony would be an opportunity to celebrate their achievements. “The whole Wellington community gets behind the graduation celebrations, so we strongly encourage all students to participate.”

Auckland University, meanwhile, will be holding three mega-graduations rather than extra ceremonies. The ceremonies, to be held at Spark Arena on 6, 7 and 8 October, will cater for recent graduates as well as the 4,000 students who deferred graduating after the May ceremony was cancelled.
