Universities set up funds for students affected by COVID-19
Prominent universities around Thailand are taking action to help students whose livelihoods have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with Prince of Songkla University in the south being the latest establishment to offer assistance programmes, following moves by other universities like Chulalongkorn and Thammasat, reports Khaosod English.Niwat Kaewpradub, president of Prince of Songkla University, announced on Monday 18 May that a fund worth THB150 million (US$4.7 million) was set up to assist affected students. Tuition fees will be reduced by 20%. A discount of 10% is also being given to 15,600 students who are staying at the university’s dormitories. Another THB10 million is set aside for emergency loans for students.
“If the COVID-19 situation continues to be severe, the university will organise online teachings,” Niwat said. “There are five computer centres with 1,000 computers available, and students who do not have computers can use them.”
