Higher education ministry launches online lesson project

The government of the Gambia through the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology recently pumped GMD5.9 million (US$115,600) into online education meant to enable students of post-secondary institutions to receive lectures online starting on 28 April, writes Landing Colley for The Voice.

The online classes project will go for a period of six months and the post-secondary institutions to benefit from it include University of the Gambia, Gambia College, Gambia Technical Training Institute, and Management Development Institute. Part of the money for the project will be used to purchase learning materials like laptops and data sim cards and to pay adjunct (assistant) lecturers.

Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance Juldeh Ceesay said that despite the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, education has to move on. The ministry is proposing to pay GMD70 to each student every month to access Google Classroom.
