University awards 11,000 degrees in virtual graduation
South Africa’s University of Pretoria awarded 11,000 degrees, diplomas and certificates during a virtual graduation ceremony on Monday 6 April, writes Chelsea Ntuli for Pretoria News.During the online ceremony 234 doctorates and 1,492 masters degrees were conferred by Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Tawana Kupe. He said he conducted the virtual graduation in the context of a COVID-19 global pandemic to enable the students to formally graduate so that they could get their certificates and get on with their lives.
“The virtual graduation ceremony will stay in our memories because of the extraordinary way in which the virus has brought the whole world to a standstill,” he said.
