Universities sign deal to publish French-language books

The publishing houses of the business school Supdeco Dakar in Senegal and the University of Quebec in Canada have signed a joint publishing agreement to “promote the sharing of knowledge and research findings between academics in Africa and Quebec”.

The contract, which will facilitate increased production of French-language course materials, is between the University of Quebec Press (Presses de l’Université du Québec or PUQ) and Éditions du Commerce of Supdeco Dakar, reported the Agence de Presse Sénégalaise (APS).

It was signed during a visit to Dakar by Martine Des Rochers, director general of PUQ. According to its website PUQ has also recently signed a similar contract with the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Under the Supdeco agreement authors from Quebec and Africa will work together to produce educational books for West Africa, covering disciplines such as management, finance, marketing, management of human resources and business law.

Des Rochers said: “Our publishing house is an important lever for the spread of knowledge in Quebec and abroad. It is with much enthusiasm that we welcome this agreement. The PUQ has always aimed to reach the greatest number of readers by different means, and in many places. The more accessible knowledge becomes, the better our judgement and decision-taking as citizens. We are sure this agreement will contribute to the mobility of knowledge, and we welcome it.”

A statement from the two organisations said the partnership would encourage the publication of books in a cooperative spirit, and spread their influence throughout the French-speaking world, reported APS. – Compiled by Jane Marshall
