Anti-national activities banned at UP universities

Reacting to the Uttar Pradesh government’s proposed ordinance requiring private universities to give an undertaking that they will not let their campus or name be used for anti-national activities, opposition party, the Congress said the decision smacked of a conspiracy, reports Express News Service.

Dwijendra Tripathi, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary and spokesman, said: “The law, when enacted, will keep the universities in the fear of de-recognition”, adding that it was an attempt by the Yogi Adityanath government to exert greater control over the education system, given the lack of clarity over what defines anti-national activities.

The draft Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Ordinance 2019 will be applicable to all 27 private universities in the state, giving them a period of one year to adopt all the provisions of the ordinance. Violating provisions of the ordinance will attract strict action from the state government.
