Students in peaceful protest against fee hike
Students of the University of Juba in South Sudan have staged a peaceful demonstration against a new hike in tuition fees, announced in a circular by the administrations of the country’s five public universities, reports APA.The hike, between SSP50,000 (US$380) and SSP86,000, comes nearly two years after the country’s parliament and president rejected a similar recommendation by the administration.
Protesting on Tuesday 12 March, the students said the new fees are unrealistic and therefore amount to a denial of the right to education. “All of us are facing the same economic challenges that the university administration is complaining about. The salary our parents and guardians get cannot cover these kind of fees,” said one student who spoke on condition of anonymity.
