State takes ‘revolutionary’ step, funds university science

The state budget of Ukraine for the first time has provided the funds, amounting to UAH100 million (US$3.5 million), for basic financing of science in the higher education establishments, reports Ukrinform.

"The state budget for 2019 for the first time provides UAH100 million for basic financing of the scientific directions in leading higher education establishments. This step, along with the launch of the National Research Fund, will become truly revolutionary for our scientific system in 2019. The science in the universities for the first time will start to grade up to the institutional capacity of science in the research institutes," Deputy Education and Science Minister of Ukraine Maksym Strikha wrote in an article for the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, a Ukrainian online newspaper.

He noted that both higher education establishments and research institutes would benefit from this step as they "will get effective partners in the field of science". Regarding the status of research institutes, the deputy minister emphasised that the ministry had worked to harmonise the requirements of the law ‘On Higher Education’ with the recommendations of European experts.
